Grade 23, also known as Ti-6Al-4V ELI or Grade 5 ELI, is the medicalgrade, high-toughness variant of standard Grade 5 titanium alloy. It has ultra-low oxygen, nitrogen, carbon content for superior ductility, fracture toughness, and biocompatibility.

 

Grade 23 is also called Grade 5 ELI and Gr23 Titanium Plates is the premium Ti-6Al-4V variant optimized for medical implants and high-reliability aerospace applications. Its defination is ultra-low interstitial content. It delivers unmatched toughness, ductility, and biocompatibility compared to standard Grade 5.

What does ELI stand for?

ELI stands for Extra Low Interstitial.

It refers to reduced levels of oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, and iron in the titanium alloy. Lower interstitial content improves fracture toughness, ductility, fatigue resistance, and weldability. Especially it is critical for medical implants and cryogenic use.

Is Grade 23 more expensive than Grade 5?

 

Yes. Grade 23 has the strict chemical purity control and more rigorous testing, so it is more costly than standard Grade 5.

What are the differences between Gr23 and Gr5?

  • Only ASTM F136 Grade 23 is approved for load-bearing, long-term implants for medical implants.
  • Grade 5 is sufficient and more cost-effective unless cryogenic service, high fatigue, or strict biocompatibility is required for general aerospace and industrial.

How to verify material quality?

  • Request MTC with full chemical and mechanical test data.
  • Confirm compliance with ASTM F136 or AMS 4907.
  • Check for batch-specific PMI and ultrasonic testing for internal defects.
