Titanium Grade 5 is the most widely used titanium alloy, consisting of 6% aluminum, 4% vanadium, and balanced properties. It is the primary structural titanium plate material for civil and military aircraft due to balanced strength, lightweight, corrosion resistance and processability.

What surface quality requirements apply to aviation Grade 5 titanium plates?
- No cracks, inclusions, porosity, scratches, dents or oxidation layers on finished surfaces
- Uniform mill finish or pickled bright surface; heavy oxide scale must be fully removed
- Surface roughness Ra ≤3.2μm for machined structural surfaces

- Store in dry, constant-temperature warehouse with humidity below 60% to prevent surface water staining
- Separate from carbon steel; use wooden or plastic spacers to avoid iron contamination.
- Cover plates with protective plastic film; avoid direct contact with dust, acid, alkaline chemicals
- Stack flat to prevent bending deformation; mark material heat lot number for traceability
Is Grade 5 titanium plate suitable for supersonic aircraft?
Yes for most structural parts. Ti-6Al-4V maintains stable performance under sustained flight temperature up to 400°C, matching the thermal load of Mach 2–2.5 aircraft. For hypersonic flight with surface temperature over 500°C, high-temperature titanium alloys will replace Grade 5 plates.
