Grade 5 titanium rod is the most widely used α-β titanium alloy, containing approximately 6% aluminum, 4% vanadium, and balance titanium.
It is the most popular titanium alloys, accounting for about 50% of global titanium alloy usage. Common processing methods for Grade 5 titanium rod include peeling / turning to achieve high dimensional accuracy and smooth surface finish, and pickling to remove oxide scale, surface defects and contaminants. These processes ensure excellent mechanical properties and surface quality for further applications.

Manufacturing Process for Grade 5 Titanium Rod
During manufacturing
1. Raw Material Preparation
Select high-purity titanium sponge to match Grade 5 composition.
Compact sponge + alloy mix into dense consumable electrodes for vacuum melting.
2. Vacuum Melting
2–3 remelts ensure chemical homogeneity.
Electron Beam Cold Hearth Melting (EBCHM) for ultraclean ingots
3. Ingot Conditioning & Heating
Grind/ machine ingot surface to remove oxides and defects.
Heat ingot to 950–1050 °C in a controlled atmosphere furnace.
4. Primary Forging
Forge ingot into square/rectangular billet at 995–1050 °C with large deformation to break cast structure and refine grains.
Repeated upsetting and drawing to improve uniformity.
If deformation is high, anneal at 800–850 °C to relieve stress.

During manufacturing
5. Hot Rolling
Heat to 850–950 °C
Reduce billet to intermediate rod diameter via continuous hot rolling.
Final rolling to target diameter; finish temp ≥ 800 °C to avoid cold work.
Air cool to room temperature.
6. Intermediate Annealing
Heat rolled rod to 700–800 °C, hold 1–2 h, air cool to eliminate residual stress and restore ductility.
7. Final Heat Treatment
Solution treatment,Aging to ensure balanced tensile strength (≥900 MPa) and ductility.
8. Surface Finishing
Peeling / turning, Pickling, Straightening, Polishing / grinding
9. Quality Inspection & Testing
Check diameter, length, straightness, roundness.
Nondestructive testing (NDT):
Ultrasonic testing (UT): Detect internal flaws (ASTM B348).
Eddy current: Surface defect screening.
Mechanical testing: Tensile, yield, elongation, hardness (HRC / HV).
Chemical analysis: Verify Ti-6Al-4V composition.
Metallography: Check microstructure uniformity.
