Titanium Grade 5 round rod is solid cylindrical bar stock made from Ti-6Al-4V, the most widely used alpha-beta titanium alloy. It occupies over 50% of global titanium alloy consumption.

 

Titanium Grade 5 round rod is the most widely used alpha-beta titanium alloy bar. Its chemical composition contains 6% aluminum and 4% vanadium as main alloy elements, processed into solid cylindrical round bar stock via forging, rolling, drawing or extrusion. It balances high strength, low density, excellent corrosion resistance and good machinability.

Manufacturing Process of Titanium Grade 5 Round Rods

 

1.Raw Material Compounding and Electrode Fabrication

High-purity titanium sponge is blended with aluminum and vanadium alloys in standard ratios, then pressed and welded into integrated electrodes for melting.

 

2.Vacuum Arc Remelting and Ingot Casting

High-vacuum VAR melting (double or triple times) removes impurities and avoids composition segregation, producing dense and uniform titanium alloy ingots.

 

3.Hot Forming and Precision Cold Processing

Billets are shaped to target sizes by hot rolling or rotary swaging. Precision small rods adopt cold drawing with intermediate annealing for high dimensional accuracy and smooth surface.

 

4.Professional Heat Treatment

Two mainstream heat treatments are applied based on usage demands. Annealing delivers balanced mechanical properties, while solution and aging treatment significantly enhances structural strength for high-load working scenarios.

 

5.Finishing, Inspection and Packaging

Rods are straightened, ground, cut and deburred. They pass strict non-destructive, chemical and mechanical tests before final packaging and delivery.

  • Use low cutting speed, abundant coolant to avoid heat buildup
  • Sharp carbide tools recommended; avoid high friction to prevent work hardening
  • Deep drilling requires peck drilling cycles to clear chips

02. Can it be bent, forged or threaded?

  • Forging: Excellent forgeability at 800–950°C for complex component preforms
  • Threading: Can be turned for internal/external threads with proper tooling
  • Cold bending: Limited ductility; hot bending recommended for large deformation

03. Is Grade 5 titanium rod recyclable?

100% recyclable. Titanium scrap from machining cuttings and offcuts can be remelted and reused without major performance degradation.

04. Any special storage requirements?

Store in dry warehouse; avoid long-term contact with iron/carbon steel to prevent galvanic corrosion. No rust risk itself, but surface scratches should be protected.
