Products Description

Titanium alloy forging is a manufacturing process that shapes titanium alloys into components with desired geometries and improved mechanical properties via controlled heat and compressive force. It is critical for producing high-strength, lightweight, corrosion-resistant parts for aerospace, medical, energy, and industrial applications.

It is a metal forming process that heats titanium alloy billet to a specific temperature, then applies compressive force to reshape it, refine internal grain structure, and greatly improve mechanical strength, toughness and fatigue performance compared with casting and rolling.

Titanium Alloy Forging has four key characteristics:High strength-to-weight ratio;Excellent corrosion resistance;High temperature performance;Fatigue and fracture resistance;Biocompatibility.

Common Titanium Alloys for Forging

Alloy Grade Key Properties Typical Applications
CP Ti (Gr1–4) Excellent corrosion resistance, low strength Chemical processing, marine, medical implants
Ti-6Al-4V (Gr5) High strength-to-weight, good fatigue Aerospace (blades, disks), automotive, sports equipment
Ti-6Al-4V ELI (Gr23) Low interstitial elements, high toughness Medical (bone plates, joints), cryogenic components
Ti-5Al-2.5Sn Superior high-temperature stability Aerospace engine parts, gas turbines

Main Forging Methods

  • Open-Die Forging: Uses simple dies for large, custom parts (e.g., shafts, rings); flexible but less precise.
  • Closed-Die Forging: Impression dies for precise, complex shapes (e.g., gears, blades); tight tolerances, improved mechanical properties.
  • Rolled Ring Forging: Produces seamless rings (e.g., aerospace casings, flanges) via radial rolling.
  • Isothermal Forging: Heated dies maintain constant temperature; ideal for complex, thin-walled components.

Why is titanium alloy harder to forge than steel?

  •

Stainless-steel-Open-Die-Forging
  • Narrow forging temperature window
  • High deformation resistance & sensitive to strain rate
Titanium forging
  • Easy oxidation and hydrogen embrittlement at high temperature
  • Strict requirement on heating atmosphere and die material

FAQ About Titanium Alloy Forging

Questions for product use

01/

What are the main forging types for titanium alloy?

A: Open die forging, closed die forging, ring rolling forging, precision near-net-shape forging.

02/

Does titanium forging need surface protection during heating?

A: Yes. High temperature makes titanium easy to oxidize and absorb hydrogen. Protective coating, inert gas or vacuum heating are usually adopted to avoid surface contamination.

03/

What industries use titanium alloy forging parts?

A: Aerospace, military defense, medical implant, marine engineering, oil & gas, chemical equipment, automotive high-performance parts.

04/

What common products are made by titanium forging?

A: Titanium forgings include shafts, rings, flanges, turbine blades, landing gear parts, medical bone plates, titanium fasteners, high-pressure vessel components.

05/

Can titanium alloy forgings be customized in size and shape?

A: Yes. We can customize open die rough forgings, closed die precision forgings according to drawings, with customized microstructure and mechanical property requirements.

06/

What quality inspections are required for titanium forgings?

A: Dimension check, surface flaw detection (MT/PT/UT), microstructure analysis, mechanical property test (tensile, hardness, impact), chemical composition inspection.
