Products Description

 

ASTM B348 is the official specification issued by ASTM International for annealed wrought titanium and titanium alloy bars and billets. Grade 5 is the most widely used α+β titanium alloy covered by this standard, corresponding to the common alloy designation Ti-6Al-4V and UNS number R56400.

It is typically supplied in the fully annealed condition, offering an excellent combination of high specific strength, outstanding corrosion resistance and good biocompatibility.

What is the difference between ASTM B348 Grade 5 and AMS 4928?

Both specify annealed Ti-6Al-4V bar stock, but serve different use cases:

 

 

 

 

  • ASTM B348: A general industrial standard with broad size ranges and baseline quality requirements, suitable for most commercial and industrial applications.
  • AMS 4928: An aerospace-specific specification (SAE International) with stricter trace element controls, mandatory ultrasonic inspection, and tighter mechanical property tolerances for flight-critical components.

How does Grade 5 compare to Grade 2 titanium under ASTM B348?

  • Grade 2 (CP Titanium): Commercially pure titanium with moderate strength (~345 MPa yield), excellent formability, and superior corrosion resistance in strongly reducing environments. Lower cost.
  • Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V): Alpha-beta alloy with nearly 2.5× the strength of Grade 2, better fatigue resistance and high-temperature performance, ideal for load-bearing structural parts.
