Chimneys are critical structures. Tall chimneys continuously discharge industrial exhaust gas in various factories. Titanium-steel clad plate chimneys, using the exceptional properties of titanium alloys, have elevated industrial anti-corrosion and structural safety standards. It becoms key to ensuring environmentally friendly and efficient industrial operations.

I. From Corrosion Predicament to Titanium-Steel

Traditional chimneys are mostly made from carbon steel, stainless steel, or acid-resistant bricks. After wet desulfurization, they might be exposed to high-temperature corrosive flue gas containing SO₂, NOₓ, and chlorides, making them prone to acid corrosion, weld cracking, and inner lining spalling.

They typically use pure titanium  as the cladding layer and Q345B carbon steel as the base layer, combining the advantages of both materials:

  • The titanium layer offers strong corrosion resistance and forms a stable TiO₂ passivation film on the surface. That is nearly immune to acid, alkali, salt, and high-temperature flue gas corrosion.
  • The steel layer ensures structural strength and rigidity. It can withstand dead weight, wind loads, seismic forces, and thermal stresses to guarantee structural stability.
  • They have Lower in cost than all-titanium chimneys and balance performance and economy. Now it becoms the mainstream solution for chimney anti-corrosion worldwide.

II. Core Advantages of Titanium-Steel Chimneys

Titanium has excellent chemical stability, resisting condensed acid, wet-dry alternation, and high-temperature oxidation in highly corrosive environments. It achieves basically one-time construction with long-term maintenance-free operation.

Titanium has only 60% the density of steel. The clad plate significantly reduces self-weight while ensuring strength, lowering foundation and support loads, and adapting to ultra-high chimneys of 180–240 meters and seismic design.

Titanium and steel are tightly bonded without delamination or leakage. Prefabricated in factories and welded on-site with argon arc welding, the inner cylinder features high integrity and airtightness, preventing flue gas and acid liquid leakage.

Titanium remains stable below 500°C. Paired with double-layer sleeves and air insulation layers, it effectively insulates heat and reduces damage, avoiding material deformation and cracking caused by sudden temperature changes.

Titanium is 100% recyclable, aligning with carbon peaking, carbon neutrality, and circular economy requirements. It does not corrode, spall, or leach heavy metals during use, and its ultra-long service life reduces resource consumption and carbon emissions from reconstruction.

III. Application Scenarios

Titanium-steel chimneys have become a standard in modern industry, widely used in:

  • Supercritical/ultra-supercritical units, desulfurization and denitrification systems .
  • Tail gas emission from sintering, coking, and steelmaking processes.
  • Chemical and petrochemical industries: Highly corrosive flue gas emission from sulfuric acid, phosphate fertilizer, and refining units.
  • Waste incineration, hazardous waste treatment, and biomass power generation.
  • Coastal power plants and port facilities, resisting both salt spray and industrial corrosion.

IV. Technology and Construction

Titanium-steel chimneys represent a high integration of materials, structure, and construction:

  • Explosion welding + rolling cladding technology ensures firm bonding between titanium and steel, meeting large-panel and high-precision requirements.
  • Mainly sleeve-type and clustered structures, with a concrete outer cylinder matched with a titanium-steel clad plate inner cylinder and an air insulation layer in between, enhancing heat insulation, anti-corrosion, and seismic performance.
  • Inner cylinders are prefabricated in sections in factories, hoisted on-site by hydraulic lifting inverted installation, and welded by high-altitude argon arc welding. Welds are inspected by PT/UT non-destructive testing to ensure construction quality.
