Traditional steel drilling tools are prone to corrosion and fracture, heavy in weight and poor in drilling efficiency, which cannot meet the demands of deep well and offshore exploitation. Titanium alloys  serve as the core material for the lightweight upgrading of high-end drilling and production equipment, ensuring the safe and efficient exploitation of complex oil and gas reservoirs.

I. Core Performance Advantages

1. High strength-to-weight ratio

With a density approximately 60% that of steel and strength comparable to ultra-high-strength steel, they reduce the weight of pipe strings and the load on drilling rigs, facilitating the construction of ultra-deep wells and long horizontal wells.

2. Excellent corrosion resistance

The stable oxide film on the surface enables resistance to various types of corrosion in acidic oil and gas wells and seawater. Their properties remain stable even in a highly corrosive environment at 330℃, extending the service life of tools.

3. Superior fatigue resistance

They are not easily damaged under alternating loads, with a fatigue life far superior to carbon steel, reducing downhole fracture failures.

4. Strong working condition adaptability

They have a low elastic modulus and low drilling resistance, leading to higher precision in directional drilling. Their non-magnetic property and resistance to high and low temperatures do not interfere with downhole detection equipment, making them suitable for special exploitation scenarios such as deep seas, polar regions and high-temperature deep layers.

II. Specific Applications

1. Titanium alloy drill pipes

They are suitable for deep wells, ultra-deep wells and complex directional wells. Compared with steel drill pipes, they are lighter in weight and have better toughness, fatigue resistance and corrosion resistance, which can reduce drilling resistance and improve drilling efficiency. Domestic 105ksi grade titanium alloy drill pipes have been applied in 7,100-meter ultra-deep wells, and multiple products have obtained international certifications and been tested in offshore exploitation. Drill pipes modified with ruthenium have stronger stress corrosion resistance, adapting to extreme well conditions such as geothermal and deep-sea environments.

2. Titanium alloy tubing and casing

Steel pipe strings are susceptible to corrosion in high-sulfur, high-salt and acidic oil wells. Titanium alloy pipes have outstanding anti-corrosion and mechanical properties, with a service life more than 5 times that of stainless steel in corrosive environments. They do not require additional anti-corrosion coatings, resulting in lower operation and maintenance costs. Domestic 110 steel grade titanium alloy pipes of various types have achieved mass production and trial use, meeting the long-term exploitation requirements of deep wells and high-acid oil fields and extending the development cycle.

3. Downhole supporting tools and offshore drilling components

Titanium alloys can be used to manufacture precision downhole tools such as centralizers, packers and sensor housings, preventing corrosion-induced jamming and damage. Their inherent non-magnetic property does not interfere with logging while drilling (LWD) equipment, ensuring the accuracy of measurement data. In offshore scenarios, they resist seawater salt spray corrosion and alternating loads, and are used as platform risers and underwater connectors, extending equipment life and reducing maintenance costs.

III. Development Status and Technological Breakthroughs

1. China has abundant titanium resources and a complete titanium processing industrial chain, which provides support for the R&D and mass production of titanium alloy oil drilling and production tools. Relying on national-level scientific research projects, domestic related equipment has got rid of import dependence and achieved a leap in independent innovation and localization.

2. In terms of materials, low-cost corrosion-resistant titanium alloys such as Ti-6Al-4V-Ru have been developed through microalloying, enhancing the anti-corrosion and fatigue resistance capabilities under high-temperature acidic working conditions.

3. In terms of processes, key technologies such as titanium alloy pipe rolling, precision welding and high-precision thread processing have been overcome. In 2008, the first domestic high-end titanium alloy seamless pipe for petroleum, DF-1#, was put into production, filling the domestic gap.

IV. Future Development

1. Material improvement: Optimize formulations through microalloying to develop high-strength, wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant titanium alloys while controlling costs, solve the problem of easy material damage in high-temperature, high-pressure and highly corrosive environments, and broaden applicable scenarios.

2. Intelligent and efficient processing: Adopt processes such as intelligent cutting and precision forming to improve processing accuracy and efficiency; optimize thread and pipe forming processes to enhance sealing performance, and improve surface wear resistance through spraying and composite heat treatment.

3. Capacity expansion and standardization: Reduce production costs based on domestic technologies to popularize titanium alloy drill pipes and anti-corrosion pipes in ordinary oil wells; improve industry standards covering the whole process of material design, production and testing.

4. Improvement of supporting systems: Develop supporting connectors, testing and repair technologies, and build a full-life-cycle operation and maintenance solution; develop new titanium alloy drilling tools adapted to the needs of intelligent drilling measurement and control, and promote intelligent drilling operations.
